The filings show a move from cultural recognition toward a source-identifiable commercial brand.
The boundaries between meme culture and intellectual property are becoming more important as crypto projects attempt to expand beyond token markets.
Mumu the Bull provides a timely example.
The character has roots in 4chan’s /biz/ community dating to 2018, where it developed as a bullish counterpart to Bobo the Bear. Its meaning was shaped organically through years of community use rather than through a formal marketing campaign.
The current project is now adding legal infrastructure around that recognition.
MUMU is listed by IP Australia as Application 2682039. The project also identifies MUMU THE BULL as Application 2682957. According to the project, the applications cover digital media and NFT-authenticated works, apparel and entertainment branding.
The two-filing approach is notable because it addresses both the short-form name and the fuller character identity.
Trademark applications are subject to examination and should not be confused with completed registrations. Strategically, however, they can establish a formal record and create a basis for future expansion if the marks proceed successfully.
Australia’s participation in the Madrid Protocol also provides an established international mechanism. WIPO’s Madrid System allows eligible applicants with a qualifying basic mark to apply for protection across selected member jurisdictions using a centralized international filing process.
For a meme project, the significance is practical.
A clear brand owner can license merchandise, negotiate partnerships, create official media products and distinguish authentic goods from direct commercial copies. Those activities are much harder when a character’s ownership is undefined.
Mumu’s pre-token internet history makes the strategy especially relevant. Most new projects have to create earned mindshare and legal infrastructure at the same time. Mumu is attempting to formalize an identity that has already circulated for years.
As crypto becomes more integrated with consumer products and mainstream media, that sequence may become increasingly valuable.
The next phase of memecoin competition may not be defined only by which community can generate attention fastest.
It may also depend on which communities can turn that attention into a brand that survives after the market moves on.
